The Living Desert

 

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, located in Palm Desert, California, is a unique non-profit zoo and botanical garden dedicated to the conservation and appreciation of desert ecosystems. Spanning 1,200 acres, with 80 acres developed as zoo and gardens, it is home to over 500 animals representing more than 150 species.

Exhibits and Attractions:

– African Safari: Explore the savanna and encounter giraffes, black rhinos, cheetahs, zebras, and more.

– Australian Adventures: Walk among wallabies and see vibrant budgies flying overhead in this immersive habitat.

– Wild Americas: Discover the desert ecosystems of North America, featuring animals like foxes, coyotes, and various desert cats.

– Botanical Gardens: Wander through gardens showcasing a diverse array of desert flora, including the Kokerboom tree and Saguaro cactus.

– Nature and Hiking Trails: Embark on trails ranging from the easy Discovery Loop to the challenging Wilderness Loop, each offering unique desert views.

– Children (3-17): $29.95
– Children under 3: Free

Tickets must be pre-purchased online or at the self-service kiosks near the Zoo entrance.

Conservation Efforts:

The Living Desert is committed to desert conservation through preservation, education, and appreciation. It participates in species reintroduction programs, including efforts to return Arabian oryx to Oman.
