Southwest Trails

Southwest Portland boasts a network of urban trails that offer residents and visitors opportunities for walking, hiking, and biking through the area’s scenic landscapes. These trails are maintained and promoted by SWTrails PDX, a community group dedicated to enhancing pedestrian and cycling infrastructure in the region. Their initiatives include leading regular monthly hikes, organizing volunteer work parties for trail maintenance, collaborating with city planners to develop safe pedestrian routes, and advocating for improved walking and biking conditions in Southwest Portland.

The organization has identified and maintains seven urban trails, each marked and designed to showcase the natural beauty and hidden gems of the area. These trails often provide a respite from the city’s hustle and bustle, allowing users to explore parks, natural areas, and neighborhoods.

For those interested in self-guided hikes, SWTrails PDX has developed 35 unique routes covering approximately 177 miles throughout Southwest Portland. Each hike is assigned a rating based on total distance, helping individuals choose trails that match their fitness levels and interests.

Beyond the SWTrails network, Southwest Portland features several notable parks and natural areas with additional trails:

  • Marquam Nature Park: Spanning over 200 acres, this park offers several miles of hiking trails amidst native plant species like bigleaf maple and Douglas fir. The Marquam Trail within the park connects to the larger 40-Mile Loop, providing extended hiking opportunities.
  • Tryon Creek State Natural Area: As the only Oregon state park within a major metropolitan area, Tryon Creek encompasses 645 acres and features an extensive trail system for hiking, a paved bicycle path, and horse trails. The park’s diverse flora and fauna make it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts.

For those seeking curated trail experiences, platforms like AllTrails offer hand-curated maps, driving directions, and detailed reviews from fellow hikers, providing valuable insights into the various trails available in Southwest Portland.

Engaging with these trails not only promotes physical activity but also fosters a deeper connection with the natural beauty and community spirit of Southwest Portland.
